5 Things You Can Do to Kill Termites – DIY

Would you rather try to handle these nasty little demons on your own? We’ve got just the tricks. Obviously, we’d always recommend calling a pro, because termites can be a little tricky to exterminate at times, but we totally get it. Sometimes, you just want to put your big boy or big girl pants on and handle these puppies on your own. So here you go!

First, you must determine if the termites are Drywood Termites or Subterranean Termites.

1. Foams or Insecticides

This can often be the easiest and fastest way to eradicate termites. With some treatments, you’d have to evacuate the home for X amount of time. But with foam for instance, you can apply it directly to the infected wood and it will make its way into all the cracks destroying and killing off your unwanted guests.

We recommend using Spectracide Termite Killing Foam. You can buy it at most Targets, Home Depots, or Lowes in Dodge City, KS.

2. Use Water to Flood The Soil

For subterranean termites, you can grab the hose and flood them out. Termites cannot swim, so they will drown if you flood the area with water. Just be sure this isn’t in an area of your property that cannot handle excess amounts of water. Use some wisdom!

3. Temperature Changes

Termites are not able to withstand temperatures of -20 degrees Fahrenheit or 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Liquid nitrogen will allow you to freeze these suckers out pretty quickly. But trying to get something above 120 can be difficult. If the termites are in an area where you can start a fire, do that by all means. We’d probably recommend the liquid nitrogen route however.

4. Get Rid of Stumps or Rotten Wood

Rotten wood, mulch, tree stumps, and other dead woods are like candy to termites. They feed on this like your Aunt feeds on her cookie dough ice cream while watching Desperate Housewives. It’s not a pretty site. Thankfully, getting rid of this dead wood is pretty easy, and fun! You’re always looking for excuses to have a party right? Well, invite some friends over and have a campfire. Burn all of your deadwood and voila, getting rid of your termite infestation just became a party!

5. Bait

This takes a little more planning, but can be highly effective. Essentially, get some pieces of dry wood and coat them with boric acid. You can get boric acid at your local Home Depot or Lowe’s. Place these pieces of dry wood around the yard or within the vicinity of your termite infestation. The termites, being the little demon possessed biters that they are, will arrive on the scene shortly to taste the new fresh meal you’ve specially cooked up just for them. Only, the boric acid will quickly kill them. Mission accomplished.
